My bf once told me, “all you write about is doom and destruction. I mean all of your characters are destined to die”.
I was shocked, but not insulted. In fact, I was overjoyed to finally discover the type of genre in fiction I am best known for writing. I knew he was telling the truth, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to change up my style or choice of writing to meet his standards or for other readers that aren’t even my choice for a target audience.
I am my own writer. Do you have people telling you what type of shit you should write about, but you’re not comfortable writing on that subject? If that’s a yes, then you should be your own writer too.
I create works of fiction that mean something to me. There’s a message within the chapters of my novel that I have trouble speaking about. Yeah, it may be about chaos and sadness, but hell, it’s the only subject I am most familiar with. All I ever see on the news and on social media is depressing shit. I have to get ideas and inspiration from somewhere.
Why don’t you write about love?
mom
I wish I could write on romance, but love as a millennial doesn’t exist (in my opinion). At least not for people my age in this world full of lust. If it’s love, it’s fake love and people have embraced that just so they wont be alone. If I write on love, most likely it’s going to be on a taboo topic or someone is seriously going to get hurt.
I once wrote a book about our planet killing off everything under the sun becasue humans, plant life, and animals were considered a virus. I wrote another book about starving people with no option but to eat human flesh. My point is, I wrote these books for two reasons.
- Because I fear for our future and what we are doing to our plant and ourselves.
- These are the types of books I enjoy reading.
No one else is going to write what’s on my mind, so why not just write them myself.
What is it that that you write about? Do you write for yourself or for readers?
Don’t answer these questions so fast. Take your time to really think about it. I say that becasue everyone is always telling me to write for a specific audience. Although that may be partially true, if you or myself write for a certain audience, then are we telling a story that pleases us or are we creating fiction to simply to entertain the crowd and get paid?
I really hope you’re not writing to only get paid, otherwise you have a long way to go.
Is there a topic you are most familiar with, but you think readers may be put off about it?
Write it anyways! Who cares? It’s your story and as weird as it may be, someone in this world full of billions is going to read it.
I hope this post was motivating for you. Don’t let anyone tell you what to write about becasue it’s your passion, not theirs.
