A business owner scanned over the application of an individual. It was hard for her to determine which sex they belonged to. Their skin was transparent. They had wide almond shaped passion fruit purple eyes (most likely contacts) and not a single stand of hair was on their perfectly oval head. She glanced down at the application again and read the maker for gender. They had checked “prefer not to say”.

Since the position for dishwasher required little to no experience and she needed someone right away, the business owner hired the individual on. Her other employees were horrified by this decision. They whined and complained to her how they felt uncomfortable around someone they couldn’t easily read based off their appearance. The new employee had soft features to the face, didn’t reach no more than five feet, and was slender.

“There’s no reason to be afraid.” The owner reassured her employees. Yet, they kept their distance anyways while murmuring to one an other. At the end of the day, the owner was the last to leave. She locked up her shop and headed through the cold winter night to her car. Just as she was about to open the door, she was ambushed from behind. The assailant held a knife to her neck and demanded to her get in the backseat of the car. The owner refused. She wasn’t going to be rapped and as she fought, the assailant jammed the knife into her throat.
He dashed away, leaving her behind to bleed to death in the slush. As blood filled her lungs, her vision began to fade. Out of nowhere, her new hire showed up. They leaned down beside her and looked directly into her eyes. The owner gasped for air and smiled. They smiled back, lightly placed a hand on her wound and softly whispered “you will be ok”.
She closed her eyes and moments later woke up. The gash on her neck was gone! The next day at work, the owner brought a flower to thank her new hire. Unfortunately, they never showed up. Her employees were elated and questioned her what was that thing in disgust.
“I dont know.” The owner said and touched her throat.
“Well what was the gender on the application?”
“I prefer not to say.”
