2 Minute Read Time
After a little bit of research, I found out that Hemingway did NOT quote “write drunk, edit sober”. In fact, he encouraged to do the entire process of creative writing with a clear mind! I want to punch myself in the back of head for believing and doing just that because now that I’m in the editing process of my first novel, with the skills I know I posses in creative writing, it’s awful and a massive step back towards my goal. And I really wish AI would stop suggesting I write shorter sentence because long sentences are “hard to read”.
Part of my frustration in re-reading my first draft is due to the short sentences and it’s driving me insane. It’s as if I’m reading an episode of Cocomelon where everything is choppy added with incoherent sentence structures, messy details in setting and characters, and…it’s just a hard read. I’m disappointed in myself, but its a step in a right direction for my own development. This re-read made me realize to not “Write Drunk”. I assumed in ways that it will magically build my confidence or shut down my inner editor. I’m not going to lie, two glasses of wine did do the trick for the short run, but now the goal post for holding my proof copy has moved away from me. Even if you’re the best functioning alcoholic, I would strongly encourage you not to drink and write. Save the beverage for when you reach your daily word count for the sake of saving yourself from irritation when you start editing.
Always, here’s a cover sketch of my upcoming novella (in draft mode as well), the prequel to this book I’m currently editing. I really like these covers and I’m thinking of making them a solid choice. What do you think?
